Creative Jewelry Designer and Pioneer

Suzy Menkes, Fashion Editor of the International Herald Tribune, describes Kai-Yin Lo as a pioneer "who has bridged the divide between precious and fashion jewelry". Yet her influence extends beyond elevating semi-precious stones to a wider audience. She is also recognized for raising the awareness of Chinese arts and culture and in bringing a contemporary and easy-to-wear style to traditional Chinese jewelry.

Kai-Yin's formal education started at the universities of Cambridge and London, where she studied European history, and later at the Harvard Business School. A personal interest developed into an international business when her first designs - a collection of Chinese jades and semi-precious stones giving a contemporary look to traditional materials - gained the interest of international jewelers, Cartier, New York, who bought the entire collection.

From this small beginning, Kai-Yin has built an international reputation for designs that marry Chinese aesthetics with western flair. By 1990, Kai-Yin Lo was providing collections for a worldwide market of leading stores, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue in the USA, Wako and Mitsokoshi in Japan and other leading stores across Asia and Europe. Her portfolio extends to premium gifts (including commissions by the Hong Kong Government) and a range of shawls and accessories.

As a self-made entrepreneur, Kai-Yin now concentrates on smaller, niche collections presented in exclusive shows and choice outlets such as those at the Asia Society, New York, and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco.
